What is an APET membrane

APET Material Overview

I. Basic Concepts

APET (Amorphous Polyethylene Terephthalate), also known as polyester rigid film, is a thermoforming material classified as a thermoplastic eco-friendly plastic. Its production scraps and waste are fully recyclable. With a chemical composition identical to paper (carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen), APET is a biodegradable plastic, making it a sustainable choice for modern industries.

II. Characteristics and Advantages

Environmental Benefits

  • Non-toxic & Odorless: Meets hygiene standards for food contact.
  • Eco-Safe Disposal: Unlike PVC, APET produces no secondary pollutants during incineration.

Physical Properties

  1. Lightweight:
    • Specific gravity: 1.33 (3.7% lower than PVC’s 1.38).
  2. High Strength:
    • 20% stronger than PVC film.
    • Withstands -40°C without brittleness, allowing 10% thinner film to replace PVC.
  3. Superior Fold Resistance:
    • No self-cracking or creasing, ideal for decorative surfaces (e.g., document covers).
  4. Optical Clarity:
    • Higher transparency and gloss compared to PVC’s bluish tint, perfect for premium packaging.

Chemical Resistance

  • Resists corrosion from most chemicals, ensuring durability in harsh environments.

Thermal Shrinkage

  • Heat-Shrink Polyester Film:
    • Stable at room temperature but shrinks ≥50% unidirectionally when heated above its glass transition temperature (Tg).
    • Ideal for shrink sleeves, labels, and tight-seal packaging.

III. Applications

1. Packaging Materials

  • Industries: Cosmetics, food, electronics, toys, printing.
  • Products:
    • High-end blister packaging, foldable boxes, plastic tubes, window panels.

2. Pharmaceutical Packaging

  • Key Features:
    • High transparency, gloss, and mechanical strength.
    • Exceptional barrier properties: Blocks oxygen, moisture, and contaminants, extending drug shelf life.

3. Other Applications

  • Construction: Waterproof membranes and thermal insulation materials for enhanced building safety.
