Which one has stronger impact resistance, PTFE membrane material or ETFE membrane material

Impact Resistance of ETFE Membranes

ETFE is directly formed from ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, offering:

  • High impact strength and toughness.
  • Strong shear resistance and excellent low-temperature impact performance.
  • Resilience against natural forces such as wind/snow loads and hail.

Example:

  • In extreme weather, ETFE air cushions maintain structural integrity by adjusting inflation levels, preventing rupture.
  • Its elongation exceeds 400%, further enhancing impact resistance.

Impact Resistance of PTFE Membranes

PTFE consists of a glass fiber base coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resin, forming a composite material. While PTFE offers some impact resistance:

  • Its toughness is lower than that of ETFE, making it less effective against sudden impacts.
  • Strengths lie in chemical corrosion resistancethermal stability, and electrical insulation, rather than impact performance.

Practical Applications

  • ETFE membranes are widely used in structures requiring impact resistance, such as stadiums and exhibition centers.
    • Example: The ETFE cushions of the Beijing Water Cube endured extreme weather tests without damage.
  • PTFE membranes are preferred in chemically aggressive environments, such as industrial piping and electronic components.
